WissenschaftssoziologieDie Forschung von Silke Beck befasst sich schwerpunktmäßig mit den Rollen von Wissen(schaft) in der internationalen Umwelt- und Nachhaltigkeitspolitik. Beck ist eine der Pionierinnen der MCTS-Forschung zum Weltklimarat (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) und weiteren Global Environmental Assessments. Ihre Forschungstätigkeit zeichnet sich dadurch aus, dass sie Forschung über Wissenschaft in der Gesellschaft mit Praxisaktivitäten (Forschung mit und für gesellschaftliche Zielgruppen) verbindet. Sie versucht auf diese Weise, nicht nur sozialwissenschaftliche Forschungskonzepte in die sog. Praxis einzuspeisen, sondern zugleich auch im Lichte der praktischen Erfahrungen einem Realitätscheck zu unterwerfen und bei Bedarf anzupassen.
Nach einem Akademischen Jahr im Global Environmental Assessment Project (Harvard University) hat sie am Helmholtz-Zentrum für Umweltforschung (UFZ Leipzig), einem der europaweit führenden Forschungszentren für interdisziplinäre Umweltforschung, den Aufbau einer interdisziplinären Gruppe zur Politikberatung wissenschaftlich begleitet.[1] Dieser Gruppe ist gelungen, entscheidende Impulse zur Vernetzung von Forschung und Politik im Bereich Biodiversität sowie der Ausgestaltung der Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) zu liefern (https://www. ufz.de/index.php?de=38006).
2020 wurde Silke Beck als Lead Expert für den Scoping Report des IPBES Assessment of Transformative Change nominiert. Für diese sichtbaren Beiträge wurde sie zusammen mit anderen UFZ-Wissenschaftlern 2020 mit dem UFZ-Wissenstransfer-Preis ausgezeichnet.
Seit 2018 leitet sie das internationale Forschungsprojekt Governance of sociotechnical transformation (GoST)[2].
Anhand von Fallstudien im Bereich der Energie-, Agrar- und Digitalisierungspolitik untersucht dieses empirisch, wie in sog. ‚constitutional moments‘ – exemplarisch Covid-19 – Horizonte des gesellschaftlich Akzeptablen erweitert und zentrale politische Kategorien wie die der Souveränität, Solidarität oder der Gesellschaftsvertrag zwischen Wissenschaft und Gesellschaft neu konfiguriert werden.
