Engineering Responsibility Lecture Nr. 3
Communicating the social responsibility of science

Professor Maja Horst (DTU – Technical University of Denmark)

Tuesday, November 26, 2019, 6:30 – 8:00pm
at Vorhoelzer Forum, TU Munich, Arcisstr. 21, Munich

It has become commonplace to argue that science and scientists have responsibilities towards society. However, when we start to investigate what such responsibilities consist of, agreement disappears. Based on a discourse analysis of academic publications (Glerup & Horst 2014), this talk demonstrates how such disagreement was translated into an interactive installation about synthetic biology and the social responsibility of science. By being exhibited at a science festival connected to a science policy convention, the installation invited members of the public to participate alongside policy-makers and scientists in the dialogue about the future responsibility of science. However, the exhibition also allows us to understand public engagement as a multifaceted endeavour with a number of overflows and negotiations of identities and responsibilities of publics, scientists, scientific organisations and policy-makers.

Maja Horst is Pofessor of Responsible Technology at DTU – Technical University of Denmark. She was formerly head of department and professor of research communication at the University of Copenhagen.

Organized by the Engineering Responsibility Lab, the Science and Technology Policy Research Group and SCALINGS at the Munich Center for Technology in Society, Technical University of Munich. The lecture will be followed by an informal reception for further exchange with drinks and snacks.

Please share this invitation with interested colleagues.
