First step

Essay questions for the application period 2020 (admission: winter semester 20/21)

Please write an essay on one of the following topics (no more than three A4 pages, Arial 11, line spacing 1.5; Harvard system of referencing):

Question 1
The current climate crisis is widely perceived as one of the most pressing issues of our times. Different technological interventions are discussed, among them geoengineering on a large-scale level. Which questions does this raise at the intersection of science, technology, and society? How would you turn this into a research question?

Question 2
Advances in robotics are expected to transform elderly care in increasingly ageing societies around the globe. Which questions does this development raise at the intersection of science, technology, and society? How would you turn this into a research question?

The essay is assessed according to the criteria a) spelling and grammar, b) identifying, describing and reflecting upon complex interrelations between technology, science and society by using specific examples, c) formulating relevant issues and questions, d) outlining an appropriate research idea

Please kindly note that you also need to sign and submit a declaration stating that the essay and your letter of motivation are your own unaided work, and that you have clearly identified any ideas taken from outside sources. Any attempt of deception/plagiarism will be penalized.

Letter of Motivation
A written statement (no more than two A4 pages) of the reasons for choosing the STS program at the Technical University of Munich in which the candidate explains the specific abilities and interests that make him/her particularly qualified for the program. This statement is assessed according to the criteria a) language, b) demonstration of eligibility and motivation e.g. through program-related extracurricular activities, vocational training, internships or stays abroad, c) link between personal interests and the STS program.


Detailed information concerning the eligibility requirements, the necessary documents and the assessment procedure can be found in the Examination and Academic Regulations for the Master’s Program Science and Technology Studies. Only the German version of the regulations is legally binding.

Third step

The interviews will take place once a week, usually on Fridays, between April and August. If you are invited to an assessment interview, you are welcome to inform us about your preferred date for an interview. Please note that all interviews are held in English.

Important Information for Non-European Applicants:
Our experience has shown that it might take a very long time to get a visa.
As you can only request your visa once you are admitted to our Master’s program, we strongly recommend that you submit your application as soon as possible.
