Prof. Dr. Christian Djeffal
Tenure Track Assistant Professor for Law, Science and Technology
Law, Science and TechnologyChristian Djeffal is Assistant Professor for Law, Science and Technology at the Technical University of Munich. At the TUM School of Social Sciences and Technology, he researches and lectures on the relationship between law and technology, focusing on new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and the internet of things (IoT).
From 2016 to 2019, Christian Djeffal was head of the Research Unit “Global Constitutionalism and the Internet” at the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society. In 2016, he received his doctorate from the Humboldt University for his thesis on “Static and Evolutive Treaty Interpretation: A Functional Reconstruction”, which was published by Cambridge University Press.
Christian Djeffal studied law at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich and at University College London. In 2010, he was a visiting scholar at the Amsterdam Center for International Law at the University of Amsterdam, and in 2012 at the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law at the University of Cambridge as well as at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg. In 2019, he was a visiting scholar at the Institute for Technology, Society, and Law at the University of Zurich.
Artificial Intelligence and the law
Artificial Intelligence describes a set of general-purpose technologies. These technologies have a variety of applications to law and constitutional issues. The opportunities and risks associated with AI must therefore be investigated and evaluated from the perspective of jurisprudence. The professorship is dedicated to clarifying and offering guidance on the relevant issues at both constitutional and regulatory levels, with respect to various AI-applications in, for example, public administration, public transport or public health.
Digitisation of Law and Jurisprudence
Digital technologies such as big data, distributed ledger technologies or artificial intelligence are changing law and jurisprudence. The professorship actively engages with these changes. It aims to provide innovative contributions towards digitising law and jurisprudence in accordance with basic principles of the constitution.
Integrative legal research
Interdisciplinary approaches in jurisprudence have a long history. At the same time, not least due to technological change, new opportunities are constantly opening up in this field. We explore new directions and emerging challenges in all areas of legal research.

Executive tRAININGS
Christian Djeffal trains leaders from various sectors, in particular from public administration, in the field of artificial intelligence. In these trainings, he deals with technical, ethical, legal and social aspects and teaches the basics of socio-technical creativity for the design of artificial intelligence. His clients include the IT Planning Council, the Administrative Academy Berlin, the Summer School of the Partnership for Germany, the Confederation of German Employers’ Associations (BDA) and the German Trade Union Federation (DGB). The core content of the training has also been made available to a broader group of participants, for example at the Long Night of the Sciences in Berlin or for the student of the NachDenkstatt 2019 in Oldenburg (Germany).
