Farmers’ perspectives on Gene Editing in Livestock Agriculture in Bavaria

On June 17, the article “Between a Rock and a Hard Place” by Prof. Dr. Ruth Müller and colleagues was published. The article examines farmers’ perspectives on the use of gene editing technologies for animal livestock and breeding. While gene editing technologies have received substantial attention, especially since the advent of the CRISPR-Cas9 method, farmers’ voices “are surprisingly often unheard or ignored in public debates about using genetic technologies in agriculture”. The article also notes that it is the first study “that interrogates farmers on this topic”.

For the piece, the Science and Technology Policy research group interviewed small- and medium-scale farmers in Bavaria and asked how they view the potential use of CRISPR-Cas9 to gene edit livestock. The article can be found as OnlineOpen here.
