On Februar 15, 2021 Andrea Geipel successfully completed the oral examination for her doctorate, in which she dealt with “’Don´t Act Like a Teacher’- How Science YouTubers become Experts.”
Andrea Geipel’s dissertation examines the extent to which expertise of science YouTubers is negotiated. Using a mixed-method approach, it was shown that the expertise of science YouTubers is negotiated between users, producers and algorithms. Knowledge shared through experiences and in networks of the platform’s actors as well as the attribution of expertise by the users play a role. The latter is based on coherent narratives regarding content, channel brand and the channel community. The results of this thesis provide possible implications for science communication offers on social media platforms.
